One of the most exciting games of the night kicked off Week 2 of the Roots Youth Box Lacrosse League (YBLL). In the U10 Division, the Gold team edged the White squad 8-7 Monday to cap off an impressive second-half comeback.
Liam Miller‘s goal with 10 seconds to play propelled his team (1-1) to its first win of the young season. Miller, who led the way with three goals, also netted the game-tying marker with just under three minutes left. His pair of tallies helped his club score outscore the White team 6-1 over the final 22 minutes of play. In goal, Jack Pearson stood tall in a 17-save effort.
The White squad, sporting Rochester Knighthawks jerseys, fell to 0-2 after the hard-fought effort. Meaghan O’Brien led her team with four goals, while Reid Lewis scored three times.
Things looked encouraging early as the K-Hawks led 5-2 at the half, courtesy of O’Brien’s hat trick. Reid Lewis chipped in with two goals, including a buzzer-beater to end the first half. In the second, O’Brien ripped a shot inside the far post to give the White side a 6-2 advantage.
However, the Gold team mounted its comeback midway through the frame, getting goals from Miles Kornbau, Michael Morgenstern and Carter Howe to trim the deficit to one. After a slick rebound bury from the White team’s Lewis made it 7-5, the Gold squad completed the comeback with a second 3-0 run. Kornbau got it started with his second of the night, which set the stage for the game’s final two goals by Miller.
In other action, the Green team improved to a league-leading 2-0 with a 6-4 victory over the Black team (1-1) in the U10 Division. In the first-place showdown, the Green side used a 19-save effort from Miles Ditzell and a three-point effort from Griffin Goetz (2+1) to secure the win. Tanner Antinora powered the Black team with a team-high two goals and seven loose balls.
The YBLL, powered by the Rochester Knighthawks, resumes next Monday at Tri-County Sports Complex in Macedon, NY. For more information on all four divisions of the Roots Youth Box Lacrosse League, go online to www.rootsboxlacrosse.com.
