Despite playing their first game in nearly two years, the Spencerport Rangers put on an offensive display in a convincing 18-8 season-opening win over the Hilton Cadets in girl’s high school lacrosse action Thursday at Cosgrove Middle School in Hilton.
Senior midfielder Hailey Rooney led Spencerport with a five-goal night while junior attack Livia Fedele added four goals and two assists for the Rangers, who led Hilton 11-3 at the half and survived a second-half push from Hilton to pick up their first win of the season. Lilly DePalma scored from beyond the 8-meter arc and notched four assists while Ruby DePalma recorded a hat trick.
Goaltender McKenna Hussar made five saves on 13 shots-against for a .385 save percentage.
Junior midfielders Danielle Mojsej and Fiona French each scored three times for Hilton, which has now dropped three of its last four contests dating back to the 2019 season.
Spencerport stormed out to an early 4-0 lead with two goals each from Rooney and Molly Guzik, the latter of whom converted twice from the 8-meter arc, setting the tone early for a well-rested and hungry Rangers team that has been idle since May 29, 2019.
French answered for Hilton with her first of three on the night to get the Cadets on the board, but a five-goal run by the Rangers shortly after proved to be the turning point as Spencerport carried an 11-3 lead into halftime.
Spencerport continued to pressure offensively in the second half with Rooney scoring three more times and Fedele finding the cage twice.
Hilton pressed to close the gap but couldn’t generate much offensively over the final 25 minutes of regulation.
The Rangers are back in action on Tuesday, May 4 when they host Eastridge in the first of a season-long five-game homestand while Hilton visits powerhouse Penn Yan on Saturday, May 1 for a 2:00 p.m. matinee.
